Thinking about how humans just want to be understood by each other—How could you even understand others when you yourself are in that “aimless state of ennui?” No wonder the billionaires think they’re gods. They forget how to understand humans.

Having just watched https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God%27s_Country_(1985_film) its wild to see how much America hasn't changed

This, definitely: " leveling the scales as something that might be good for the rich." To have a functional society that is not defined by wealth inequality really does benefit everyone!

The problem is that it seems to get harder to see this the more wealth you have and the longer you have it because the need to preserve and protect it is becomes determinative, in many cases. Sudden Wealth Syndrome is real (and the cottage industry around how to help the newly rich with their feelings as well as their money is amazing). But so is the money dysmorphia kicks in. But, again, yes to leveling the scales as a positive for us all!

I've waited so long for you to talk about Caleb in this newsletter and I knew this was coming when I saw that New Yorker article on Monday. Thanks for putting that in there.

It also makes me feel better that you didn't fully disparage folks (like me) who ingest both your and his content!

I'm an illustrator, and I have to ask: did you get permission to use The New Yorker's art? And without artist credit? If not, that could get expensive.

hey! no, that's a good callout. when i link to an article that i'm talking about or discussing sometimes i'll pull in the art too but you're right, i should specifically/explicitly credit that that's where it's coming from, though even that may not be technically fair use. regardless i just updated them

Be safe, get permission. From the publisher and/or the artist (depending on who owns the rights). Unauthorized use can cost thousands.
